Tony Parker will play in France

Tony Parker will be heading to France to play basketball—for “nearly free.”

The Associated Press reported that the French basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs is heading to ASVEL Basket, a team based near Lyon in southeast France. His salary is estimated at $1,995 a month despite earning much more money in the NBA.

"I''ll be playing nearly for free...If I play the entire season, we'll go for the title," the Spurs star said to French sports newspaper L’Equipe as reported by USA Today.

The team issued a statement welcoming Parker to their team.

"The club ASVEL Basket welcomes with great pleasure the arrival of Tony Parker, one of the best basketball players in French history," said a statement on ASVEL's official website as quoted by CNN. "Following the uncertainty of recent weeks, the club is delighted that this transaction has been finalized."

Not only is Parker playing for the team, but since he has owned 20 percent of the team since 2009, he is also ASVEL’s President of Basketball Operations.

Parker will join ASVEL in France during the lockout and receive $1,995 a month.

The guard, who won three NBA titles with the Spurs, is vice-president of the team and told L'Equipe that "I''ll be playing nearly for free ... If I play the entire season, we'll go for the title."
