Steve Jobs’ funeral to be held Friday in private ceremony

Today appears to be a day for new beginnings but also for an end of a magical journey. The iPhone 4S started pre-selling this Friday, an event that should bring joy to plenty of Apple fans. Steve Jobs, the legendary Apple figure, has passed away on Wednesday, a day after the iPhone 4S event, and his funeral is scheduled for today, an event that explains brought us plenty of sadness.

Jobs had two lives, a public one, which we covered extensively, since for the most part of the last few years, it has been linked to one of the most popular companies on the face of the Earth, and a private one, which he tried to keep private at all times. And in most cases he succeeded.

Just like his personal life, his funeral will be a private matter, the Wall Street Journal reports, a “small private gathering,” according to a person familiar with the plans. It is not even known when and where the event will take place, which is exactly what I’d expect Jobs’ wishes related to such an event to be.

Earlier his week, Tim Cook wrote an email to the team in which he said that Apple is planning a “celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life” for employees but he never went into further details about it. Friends and rivals paid their respects publicly this week while regular Apple customers turned Apple retail stores around the world into shrines, bringing one last homage to the person that created the company and then saved it from extinction.

Apple would say only that no public funeral services are planned. Apple has invited the public to send memories, thoughts and condolences to rememberingsteve(at)apple.com

Jobs died Wednesday at 56. Apple Inc. announced no cause of death, but Jobs had been diagnosed with a rare pancreatic cancer seven years ago and had a liver transplant in 2009.
