Tatooine for real Scientists confirm
The existence of a planet with a double sunset as portrayed in the Star Wars saga is now a scientific fact.
NASA has discovered a planet that orbits two stars approximately 200-light-years from Earth.
The first of its kind, the planet known as "Kepler-16b" is approximately the same size as Saturn.


Thought to be made up of gas and rock, it is unlikely the cold planet could sustain life.


Kepler principal investigator William Borucki said the discovery demonstrated the diversity of planets in our galaxy.


"This discovery confirms a new class of planetary systems that could harbour life,” he said.


“Given that most stars in our galaxy are part of a binary system, this means the opportunities for life are much broader than if planets form only around single stars.”


Researchers discovered the new planet after the smaller of the two stars partially blocked its companion star, causing a partial eclipse.


The scientists also observed irregular dimming and brightening of the light in the planet’s solar system, indicating the planet was orbiting not one but two stars.


The discovery suggests that Kepler's burgeoning data archive may be hiding many more planets than the mission's architects first envisioned, including Earth-size planets in a system's so-called habitable zone, Kepler's ultimate quarry.


The reason: Kepler scientists use a spacecraft to measure the telltale dimming and brightening that takes place as a planet passes across the face of the star it orbits. Single stars with transiting planets represent the easiest targets for this approach.


But so-called eclipsing binary stars can present similar dimming and brightening, and so they can trigger a false detection. As scientists identify these systems in the field of 156,000 stars Kepler is watching, eclipsing binaries in effect become castoffs in Kepler's hunt for extrasolar planets.


With this latest discovery, Kepler has shown that the spacecraft has the ability to tease out the presence of planets orbiting two suns. In the process, Kepler has settled a scientific debate over whether planets could form and remain in stable orbits around binary stars.


"They nailed it," says Alan Boss, a member of the Kepler team, although not part of the group that opted to hunt for planets among the binary stars that Kepler measured.


Indeed, billions of stars in the galaxy are in binary systems, says Ray Jayawardhana, a scientist at the University of Toronto who studies solar-system evolution.


Researchers have identified plenty of planets orbiting single stars, and they've spotted newly formed binary stars with disks of dust orbiting them – disks that in single-star systems represent the raw material for planets, he continues.


"This discovery shows that at least in some cases – when two stars are quite close to each other – planets can form out of those disks and survive," he says, adding that the new Kepler observations "are exquisite."


For Laurance Doyle, a physicist with the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif., and the member of the Kepler team who led the hunt, dumpster diving in Kepler's refuse bin had a lot to recommend it.


Dr. Doyle says as he has studied the potential for finding planets in binary systems in general, simulations indicated that if such a system had a planet, the object would orbit the pair of stars along the same plane that the stars occupied as they orbited each other.


Thus, with eclipsing binaries, any planet would be orbiting edge-on – the orientation needed to use Kepler's transit method to detect it. At the same time, however, a planet in such a system would have to be fairly far from the pair of stars it orbits to be detected, he adds.


In this case, the main star's smaller sibling orbits roughly 20 million miles away, and the planet orbits some 65 million miles away.


The two suns that the planet orbits are oddballs, Doyle notes. The largest star, Kepler 16-A, has about 69 percent of the sun's mass, is some 700 degrees cooler, and displays the slow rotation rate of a stellar geezer. But its intense sunspot and flare activity would suggest a young star.


And its companion? Kepler 16-B tips the cosmic scales at about 20 percent of the sun's mass and burns a few thousand degrees cooler than the sun. Yet for its low temperature, it is significantly more massive and has a larger radius than theory suggests it should be, Doyle says.


Thus, even though the planet, tagged Kepler 16-b, is in an orbit comparable to that of Venus, it receives about as much light from the two stars combined as Mars does from the sun.


As for habitable zones, this system has one, but it falls well inside Kepler 16-b's orbit. An Earth-mass planet might be stable in the zone's outermost reaches, Doyle says. Any deeper into the zone, however, and the gravitation variations from the orbiting stars would be strong enough to either eject the planet from the system or pull it to its doom, into one of the stars.


Still, if Kepler 16-b has moons – something Doyle and colleagues are searching for – and if one were habitable, residents would be privy to stunning sunrises and sunsets, with the largest orb glowing orange, the other red, and their own orbital dance ensuring no two sunrises and sunsets are ever the same.


Indeed, the Kepler 16 system could become a new playground for astrobiologists, now that the Kepler team has shown unambiguously that planets form and survive in a binary-star system.


The detection also has an element of serendipity. The system's orbital plane shifts position with time. Between 2018 and 2042, the team calculates, Kepler 16-b's transit across the largest star will vanish, while transits across the smaller star will disappear for about 35 years beginning in 2014.


For Greg Laughlin, an astronomer at the University of California at Santa Cruz, the discovery of this circumbinary planet could be a tantalizing foretaste of what may lie a mere 4.24 light-years from Earth in the Alpha Centauri system, a binary pair.


"We can't help but imagine what kinds of planets are orbiting the pair of those stars and those two stars individually," he says.


Doyle, who chuckles at the sci-fi connection between Kepler 16-b and Tatooine, notes that if there is an underlying theme to this discovery, it's that while science fiction may be engaging, it's hard to beat the real universe.


"There's so much pretend stuff," he says. "Doing the real thing is a lot more fun."

Tatooine

Tatooine,  is a fictional planet and setting for many key scenes in the Star Wars saga, appearing in every Star Wars film except The Empire Strikes Back, although it is mentioned at the end of the movie. Since it is the home planet of Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker, it is also one of the most iconic planets in the Star Wars universe.




Description


Tatooine is a desert planet in a binary star system. It once had large oceans full of marine based life and a world-spanning jungle, but this biosphere was destroyed when the myopic Rakata razed the planet, drying up its riverbeds and boiling away its oceans.
Tatooine has two stars, as it is in a binary star system. This shot from A New Hope remains one of the most famous scenes of the entire saga.
Tatooine's G-type and K-type twin stars (Tatoo I and Tatoo II) heat its surface, making water and shade hard to come by. The planet's indigenous lifeforms—such as the Womp rat, bantha, Sarlacc, and Krayt Dragon—are well-adapted to its arid climate, but human settlers often become moisture farmers and live in subterranean dwellings in order to survive. The planet's lack of resources, brutal heat, and decentralized population have made governing the planet nearly impossible.
The planet fell into the clutches of the Hutts, a clan of vile gangsters[when?]. Since Tatooine was beyond the reach of the Galactic Republic, the Hutts presided over the lawless planet with little outside interference. When the Galactic Empire subsumed the Old Republic, the new regime established only a token presence on Tatooine, which left Jabba the Hutt’s reign unchallenged. Jabba remained the assumed ruler of Tatooine until his death in the Battle of Carkoon.




Locations


Anchorhead

Anchorhead is a settlement located a few miles east of the Lars family home, south of the bustling spaceport of Mos Eisley, and primarily consists of moisture farmers.




Bestine


Bestine, the "capital" of Tatooine, is situated far west of Mos Eisley near the south-western Dune Sea. It was also one of the earliest settlements on the planet but never thrived economically, sharing the same problems as many other settlements on the dry world. The Galactic Empire eventually established its base of operations here and placed its regional governor in the city's Main Hall. It is featured prominently in Star Wars: Galaxies.




Dune Sea


The Dune Sea is a huge sandy desert, near the cities of Anchorhead, Mos Eisley and Tosche Station. It is inhabited solely by Tusken Raiders, Jawas, wraids, dewbacks and the occasional Krayt dragon. Moisture farmers often have many moisture vaporators located in the Dune Sea to collect the scarce water vapor from the air.




Great Pit of Carkoon


The Great Pit of Carkoon is located within the Dune Sea. It is a large depression in the desert sand created by the Sarlacc, a large omnivorous creature that uses the pit to capture prey. The Great Pit of Carkoon is the site of a skirmish that takes place between Luke Skywalker and the forces of Jabba the Hutt. The Hutt crime lord and most of his minions were killed during the battle.




Jabba's Palace


Jabba's Palace, is located in the desert known as the Dune Sea and was home to the gangster Jabba the Hutt. It is introduced as the main setting of the beginning of Return of the Jedi. Jabba's palace is also the main setting in Tales From Jabba's Palace edited by Kevin J. Anderson, as well as a playable area in the video games Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: Battlefront II. The palace was originally a monastery built by the mysterious B'omarr monks, who still inhabit parts of the palace.




Jundland Wastes


The Jundland Wastes occupy most of Tatooine's temperate area, a rocky region known for its numerous cliffs and a multitude of hidden dangers. Obi-Wan Kenobi lived in a small dwelling on the edge of the Jundland Wastes after he took the infant Luke Skywalker to live on a moisture farm with relatives to hide the boy from Darth Vader. This area is also a level in the video games LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy and LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga.




Moisture farms


Moisture farms are small agricultural settlements found in the deserts of Tatooine that utilize a large amount of moisture collecting devices spread over a wide area to harvest water from the relatively dry air of the planet. Luke Skywalker spent his early years living with his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru on a moisture farm. Moisture farmers harvest water vapour from the atmosphere, and use it to grow crops in underground hydroponic labs.




Mos Eisley


Mos Eisley is a spaceport town. In Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Obi-Wan Kenobi described Mos Eisley as a "wretched hive of scum and villainy." It is also the home of the Mos Eisley Cantina and Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes.

The Mos Eisley Cantina, officially named Chalmun's Cantina, is a bar located in Mos Eisley. It is the haunt of freighter pilots and other dangerous characters of varying races.
It is featured in LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy and LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga.




Mos Espa


Mos Espa is a city known for its distinct "desert-proof" domed buildings. It is home to a podracing track and was the home of Anakin and Shmi Skywalker in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. There was a large slave quarter within the rugged city.




Tosche Station (Toshi Station)


The Tosche Station, or Tosche Power Station, is a general store found in the city of Anchorhead. It sells a variety of goods such as power converters. Tosche Station serves as the central location in the Anchorhead Story of Star Wars, a series of scenes that were deleted from Episode IV. It is described as a frequent hangout for Anchorhead's youth due to the fact that its owner, Merle Tosche, is seldom around. In his absence, "Fixer" runs the business, accompanied by his girlfriend Camie, and assisted by a repair droid.




Tatooine's namesake


The planet is not actually named in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope; according to Lucas he intended to name it Utapau but finally he named it retrospectively after a nearby town to the movie's desert location, Tataouine (French spelling) or Tataween spelling in southern Tunisia. Utapau however was given to a different planet, in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.[3] Filming was not done in the Tunisian town of Tatouine itself, but instead at Tunisian locations such as Matmâta, Djerba, and Tozeur.
The name "Tatouine" comes from the Berber word "Titawin" which means "sources". The city of Tetouan in northern Morocco has the same root. The word "Tatuin" (pronounced the same) in Spanish also means temporary tatoo, or a skidmark that you often leave in your undergarments.




Tatooine in science


The California Institute of Technology reported on July 13, 2005 that Maciej Konacki, a senior postdoctoral scholar in planetary science, discovered a planet orbiting a triple-star system known as HD 188753 in the constellation Cygnus about 149 light-years from Earth. It is the first planet to be discovered orbiting a multi-star system, and Konacki refers to planets of this type as "Tatooine planets" after Luke Skywalker's home world.
More recently, the South African Astronomical Observatory reported on June 14, 2011 that Drs. Stephen Potter and Encarni Romero-Colmenero and collaborators have found evidence for the existence of an extraordinary planetary system where two giant planets are orbiting a close pair of "suns" (known as UZ For) similar to the binary star system of Tatooine.
