Saggy Pants Ban Earns Georgia Town $4,000

ALBANY, Georgia (AP) – Officials in Georgia say a city’s ban on saggy pants has generated nearly $4,000 in fines in less than a year.
Some 187 citations have been issued and $3,916 in fines collected since the ordinance went into effect Nov. 23.
The ordinance bans anyone from wearing pants or skirts more than 3 inches (7.6 centimeters) below the top of the hips, exposing the skin or undergarments.

According to City Attorney Nathan David the Municipal Court says “187 citations have been issued and fines collected” All together the city has raised $3,916.49 since going into effect on November 23.

Under the city ordinance a first offense comes with a fine of $20 while each additional fine runs up a $200 tab.

While city officials don’t have the power to jail offenders and non-paying offenders they are allowed to issue up to 40 hours of community services to be completed instead of a payment.

The city enacted the ordinance after politicians in the United States began relating low hanging clothing to delinquency, poor learning and crime.

Do you think it’s fair that Albany officials are charging people for their dress choices?

The 62-year-old victim from The Hague filed a police complaint in August due to the persistent phone calls. Police arrested the suspected stalker Monday, seizing several cell phones and computers from her home in Rotterdam.

Hague prosecution spokeswoman Nicolette Stoel said Thursday the woman argued to judges at a preliminary hearing she had a relationship with the man and the number of calls she placed to him wasn't excessive.

"Early Show" co-anchor Jeff Glor reported her calls works out to 1,250 times a week, 178 times a day or about once every eight minutes. Glor added that calculation is based on if she weren't sleeping.
