Mel Gibson Explains Judah Maccabee Biopic

Mel Gibson is famously anti-Semitic, so why is he so interested in making a movie about Judah Maccabee? It seems like a publicity stunt to some who can see through Gibson's ploys at cashing-in on the suffering of the people he obviously hates. News of his movie plans instantly caused an uproar among those who can't stand him and support from those who stand behind him. So why is he doing it anyway?

TMZ shares that Mel Gibson is making the Jewish hero movie because he's a longtime admirer of Judah Maccabee. He says that this is not an "act of contrition" and even made the famous comments that many "closet-racists" make. Yes, folks, Mel Gibson says he isn't an anti-Semite because he has a lot of Jewish friends. His lawyer is Jewish, etc etc etc.

Anyway, sources close to Mel say that in a way, this is a movie that exposes wrongdoing by "the church" -- presumably the Catholic church. He thinks the story of the man will encourage change in the church. Yeah right. It just seems like another attempt at making even more money while he thinks in his heads that "Jews killed Jesus." The man is as ignorant and rabid as the likes of Glenn Beck and other religious zealots.

Gibson maintains he is not anti Semitic and has many Jewish friends and employees, including his lawyer and publicist. His rant is a closed chapter, something that he has apologized for and met Jewish leaders over.

The 55-year-old actor's plans for the Maccabee movie go back a decade and are aimed at high-lighting corruption in the church, in the hope of forcing a change; as Maccabee's story parallels the modern church.

Judah Maccabee - acclaimed as one of the greatest warriors in Jewish history alongside Joshua, Gideon and David - defeated the Greek-Syrian armies in the second century B.C.

The Jewish feast of Hanukkah ("Dedication") commemorates Maccabee's victory and restoration of Jewish worship at the temple in Jerusalem in 165 BCE.

Gibson on Thursday, September 8 announced plans for a biopic on Judah Maccabee. He is teaming up with screenwriter Joe Eszterhas - Betrayed and Music Box - for the project with Warner Bros., which clinched the project in competition with several other studios.

According to TMZ, two powerful Jewish organizations are opposed to Mel's participation in the project.
