Westminster and Asheville thinks pink this October

Quilt for a Cause. Tipsy Star Quilts will donate 10 percent to breast cancer charities for each pink item (fabric, notions, and/or books) purchased in October.

Get a mammogram, win a spa gift. Women who receive their annual mammogram at Elizabeth Reilly Breast Center at Pardee Hospital during October will be entered to win one of 20 spa gift baskets.


Shoot For the Cause (SFTC) is ZTA's largest philanthropy event of the year. Last October, the sisters raised over $8,000; this year, ZTA made a record-breaking $12,615.
SFTC chair Hannah Bonzo began planning the three-on-three basketball tournament last November. The rest of the sisters started raising money in May. Before the tournament began on Oct. 9, ZTA raised just over $10,000. Bonzo says outside donors and students made SFTC successful.
"The tournament wouldn't even be possible if people didn't volunteer to play basketball, buy shirts, or help fund the event," Bonzo explained.

Each year ZTA teams up with Yoplait yogurt. The company donates 10 cents to Susan G. Komen for every pink lid collected. All over campus the sisters have set up boxes for yogurt-lovers to drop their lids into.
At SFTC, ZTA set up a Yoplait yogurt-eating contest to collect more lids. The winner of the competition received a Sheetz gift card.
Though SFTC is seen meant to be an enjoyable event, the true purpose is to raise money and build awareness of breast cancer. ZTA president Katie Moga says it's important for the campus to get involved because many students are directly affected by the disease.
"Breast cancer is a disease that I know affects almost anyone, someone knows someone who has been or is currently affected by the disease," Moga explained. "The statistic is one in eight women will be affected by breast cancer, so I think that it's definitely something that everyone should try and get involved in."
Athletics have also done their part to spread awareness. Westminster's Volleyball team hosted their "Dig Pink" match last night against Grove City. The Titans dominated 3-1 while sporting pink uniforms and hair accessories.
Fans were encouraged to wear pink to the game. Westminster's Student Government Association provided shirts to those willing to donate at least $5. Fans could also purchase paper volleyballs to honor someone affected by breast cancer.
