Here are some of the upcoming events focusing on breast cancer slated to take place in the Miami Valley:
MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER is the annual 5K walk that raises funds for the American Cancer Society and honors breast cancer survivors and those who have died from the disease.
This year’s event will be held Oct. 15 at the Dayton Dragons’ Fifth Third Field. Registration and festivities begin at 9 a.m., the walk starts at 10 a.m. Morning activities include vendors, educational booths, games and give-aways.
To learn more or register for the event, visit cancer.org/stridesonline. Registration is also available the day of the walk.
THE FOURTH ANNUAL BREAST CANCER VIDEO CONTEST, designed to promote breast health education and awareness in the Dayton community and beyond, will award more than $10,000 in scholarships and prizes. The contest began Oct. 1 and the deadline for entry is Oct. 31.
All high school students (grades 9-12) in the Greater Miami Valley area with a sponsoring school may participate. To enter, teachers are asked to submit all completed applications, forms, and discs with videos in QuickTime format to a contest coordinator, who will post the videos on YouTube on Nov. 1. There is no contest fee.
After the videos are posted, teachers will give students information to encourage viewing and voting from family and friends. Videos will be posted by title only — the school and student’s names will not be posted.
Scholarships ranging from $400 to $2,000 will be given to the top 10 winners and an engraved traveling trophy and check for $1,000 will be presented to the school that has the top award.
elk department store officials invite customers and others interested to stop by the Premier Boulevard location in Roanoke Rapids Wednesday to pick up all types of information about breast cancer awareness.
Area Sales Manager Margo Wills McNair said the event, which lasts from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will include medical displays allowing participants to feel prop displays containing lumps of concern.
“It was amazing to me to feel them,” she said. “The people from the Rural Health Group brought them over to feel. I was blown away. They have examples of different lumps in breasts to feel and see what you should be concerned about.”
The day’s events will include refreshments, raffles and bra fittings by certified bra fitters — all free and open to the public.
McNair said fitters will measure around a woman’s breast area to gather appropriate size information.
“Statistics show the majority of women wear the wrong size bra,” she said.
Later Wednesday evening, Halifax HealthLink will sponsor a seminar on breast cancer, beginning at 6 p.m..
The seminar, “Loving You Through It,” is free to women in the community. Refreshments will be served.
Terry Mason, mammography supervisor at Halifax Regional Medical Center, will speak about the importance of early detection by having mammograms.
She will explain guidelines for having mammograms.
Mason also will show mammograms and explain how they are interpreted.
Joining Mason will be Kathleen Fleming, community manager of the American Cancer Society, and Kenisha Bethea, of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization.
They will discuss resources available to women in the community.
The seminar begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Halifax HealthLink in Becker Village Mall in Roanoke Rapids.
For information, call Jackie Cieslinski at 252 535-4334.
Later in the week, organizers ask the community to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month with women’s health specialists at the third annual Free Breast Exam Clinic from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Friday at the office of Dr. Thomas McDonald and Dr. Frank LaBarbera in Roanoke Rapids.
There is no need to make an appointment, just come by the office at 1381 Medical Center Dr.
Organizers encourage those interested to bring their grandmother, mother, sister, aunt and neighbor to receive a free gift and breast cancer awareness information.
