We are the 99 percent is a slogan originating from the Occupy Wall Street of 2011 which is a reference to the difference in wealth between the top 1% and all the remaining citizens of the United States. The slogan became popular on in internet in the format of a picture of a person holding a piece of paper with their story on it, ending with "we are the 99%". This format was popularized by a tumblr blog wearethe99percent and spread to other websites including reddit.
The slogan has been criticized for associating the 99% with those in poverty while most of those in the 99% actually have the ability to live within their means quite comfortably.
