Julie Bowen

Julie Bowen, born March 3, 1970 is an American film and television actress. Bowen first appeared in film and television in 1992 in minor and supporting roles in film and television. She then gained recognition for portraying the role of Carol Vessey on Ed. Before then gaining wider fame for her potrayal of Denise Bauer on Boston Legal. The role of Claire Dunphy on Modern Family earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series" for her which she has portrayed since the shows debut in September 2009. , On September 18, 2011, Bowen won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Claire Dunphy on Modern Family.
Throughout Bowen's career she has maintained supporting roles in films including Happy Gilmore (1996), Multiplicity (1996), Venus and Mars (2001), Joe Somebody (2001), Kids in America (2005), Sex and Death 101 (2007), Crazy on the Outside (2010), Jumping the Broom (2011) and Horrible Bosses (2011). 


Early life

Bowen was born Julia Bowen Luetkemeyer in Baltimore, Maryland, the middle of three daughters of Suzanne (Frey) and John Alexander Luetkemeyer, Jr., a commercial real estate developer. Her older sister, Molly Luetkemeyer, is an interior designer who has appeared on Clean Sweep, and her younger sister, Annie Luetkemeyer, is a doctor at the University of California, San Francisco in the HIV/AIDS Division.[citation needed] Raised in suburban Ruxton, she first attended the Calvert, Garrison Forest Schools and also attended St. George's School, Newport in Rhode Island. She matriculated at Brown University, majoring in Italian Renaissance studies.


Career

After graduation, Bowen had a role in the soap opera Loving and made her primetime debut on an episode of the college drama Class of '96. She also had the lead role in the 1994 television film Runaway Daughters, playing opposite Paul Rudd.

In films, Bowen played the love interest of the title character in Happy Gilmore. Roles in other films include An American Werewolf in Paris and Multiplicity. On television, she has had guest roles on Party of Five, Strange Luck, and a recurring role on ER as the girlfriend of Dr. Carter. On the sketch comedy program Stella Shorts, Bowen played an angel in the "Raking Leaves" episode.
Bowen first gained prominence on the television series Ed, where she played high school English teacher Carol Vessey and the love interest of the protagonist, Ed Stevens. Since then, Bowen guest starred as the character of Sarah Shephard in five episodes of Lost.[citation needed] In the fall of 2005, Bowen joined the cast of Boston Legal, playing attorney Denise Bauer. She left the series in 2007 and returned for guest appearances in 2008. In 2008, she had a recurring role on Weeds playing Silas's love interest, Lisa.

Since fall 2009, Bowen has co-starred on the ABC sitcom Modern Family, playing Claire Dunphy. On July 8, 2010, Bowen was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

Personal life

Bowen married Scott Phillips, a real-estate investor, on September 9, 2004. Their son Oliver McLanahan Phillips was born April 10, 2007 in Los Angeles. On May 8, 2009, she gave birth to twin sons, John and Gus. Bowen is wearing a pacemaker since her early 20s due to heart problems. Despite this, she is in good shape and jogs several miles daily.
