Go Daddy GC Christine Jones Gets Going

Go Daddy general counsel Christine Jones announced last week via Twitter that it was "time for a new chapter" in her professional story. As online colleagues wished her well, Jones tweeted that deputy GC Nima Kelly (aka Nima Jones) would "keep the train running on time at  Go Daddy " in her absence.

She was an outspoken manager of the company's legal affairs during a decade of rapid and unpredictable change. "It was a good adventure," says Jones, noting that at the beginning of her tenure there was hardly any law governing the internet.

One of the GC's first hires was Kelly, who took an operations position shortly after Jones joined  Go Daddy . Jones says Kelly will serve as acting GC for now, but she anticipates that the replacement will become a permanent one.

During her tenure, Jones regularly testified before Congress on behalf of  Go Daddy  and urged other members of the "Internet ecosystem" to do their part to clean up the web. Her pet projects included stopping rogue online pharmacies and combating child pornography.

Most recently,  Go Daddy  and its GC both caught heat for their initial support of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). Going against many high-profile U.S. tech companies such as Google and Facebook, Go Daddy got behind the anti-piracy legislation -- until thousands of customers transferred their domains away from Go Daddy in a single day last December.

The biggest issue for SOPA opponents was the latitude afforded government agencies in enforcing IP infringement. On Dec. 23, the company abruptly shifted gears on its earlier pro-SOPA stance. In an official statement, newly appointed CEO Warren Adelman announced that  Go Daddy  would no longer support the bill.
